Learning Together: My Journey as Your Teacher

My name is Dr. Stephen D. Mercer, and my professional life has been built on one simple belief: education changes lives.

My own path has not always been straight or easy. I have worked in many different roles—teaching, leading, serving, and even taking on the behind-the-scenes work that keeps schools running. Each step taught me something important: that every person’s journey matters, and that growth often begins in unexpected places.

Today, as an ESL Instructor and Career & Technical Education Coordinator, I have the privilege of working with students from all walks of life. Many come to me unsure of their English, sometimes nervous about making mistakes, but always carrying big dreams for the future. My greatest joy is helping them find their voice in a new language—and watching their confidence grow.

For me, teaching English is not just about grammar and vocabulary. It is about helping you talk with your child’s teacher, apply for a better job, make friends in your community, or simply feel proud when you introduce yourself in English.
